Modern Love

I am putting a new post up which is a review for the film Textuality....

Breslin is so in love with Erin and plans to marry her, he is happy and life for him is very good, unfortunately he gets left at the alter and his life becomes depressing. 6 months later he is still struggling to get over her and has a string of women which he finds keeps him busy. He is not willing to commit to any of them as they are not Erin.

Breslin is on his way to meet one of his women when he hits a cyclist with his car. The lady is called Simone and she is a strong woman who stands for no rubbish from men. She and Breslin do seem to hit it off and after buying her a new phone he promises to pay her compensation. They exchange numbers and both go on their way.

Simone is a complex woman, she is in love with a married man and has 3 other men who she sees for sex on a regular basis, she will not commit to one man as the one she wants she cannot have. Simone starts to get message and calls from Breslin and they soon hit it off.

Both have troubled love lives but through the power of technology and texting can thy make a go of their feelings for each other and what will this mean for all the other members of their sex lives?

I had not heard of this film until it came onto Sky premier and as it sounded quite good both me and hubby sat down to watch it. Unfortunately it was not as good as we were both expecting and we found it rather dull and boring at times. I have to say that the ending was also very predictable and after the first 20 minutes we had both worked out how it was going to end and we were both spot on. The story could have been made so much better if we would have had fewer characters involved in the love lives and got to know more about the selected few. I found I was getting confused as to who was who and whether they were a sexual partner or not.

The acting was not too bad but I felt both the lead actors were holding back and not giving their all to the roles. The role of Breslin was played by Jason Lewis and he played a simple character who was love lost and struggling to get over his ex girlfriend. I think he could have given more to the role and put more emotions and expressions into his lines. I would also have liked to have got to know more about his background as with the limited amount we knew he was a very flat character. He did have a few good on screen moments with Simone but these were few and far between and I did find for the majority of their onscreen time together they were quite awkward. Simone was played by Carly Pope and she was slightly better in her role. She did seem more at ease with her character and manage to deliver her lines slightly better. She did come across in a bad light in my eyes with the way she used her men and I found this was not really necessary for the story. There were times when she was as cold as ice on screen and I felt more emotion was needed from her.

We did have one or two ok support roles. Eric McCormack played a small role and he was good. Other actors included, Kristen Hager, Liam Card, Holly Dignard and Kris Holden Reid. None of them really stood out of gave amazing performance but they did manage to bring a little bit of depth to the film.

The film was set in the present day in America and this was the perfect setting as the technology is what the film was about. We saw how people controlled their love lives and relationships by text message. I found this was a little of putting at times as we had small white boxes coming on screen showing a text and some of the text speak was hard to follow. I also found the use of the phone planner to be off putting and did come across as quite clinical. I think this could have been left out. I know the use of the text massages could not have been left out as this was the point of the film but there were just too many of them.

The sets, props and costumes were all good, they were modern so no real effort was needed with them. We did not really have any special effects in the film and none were needed as there is no action or violence in the film. The music was also a slight disappointment as this is a modern film they could have used a really powerful selection of tunes and made it more noticeable but this was not the case and now I am not able to remember a single track which was used.

I am only reviewing the film so there are no bonus features to speak about. The running time of the film is 90 minute and unfortunately I cannot find a rate on it. I would say this film is not really suitable for those under the age of 15 due to the nature of the sexual relations and the fact they would not be able to follow what was going on, me and hubby found this a little confusing at times.

I would have loved to have been able to give this film a good rate and recommendation but unfortunately I just cannot. I found the story a little odd and dull at times and the acting was only average. There was a lot of potential with this film but none of it was realised. I am only able to give this film2 stars and the advise that there are plenty of other ways to fill 90 minutes, watching paint dry may be more entertaining!
